Best Gym In Kona Hawaii: Where I Go To Workout

Living in Hawaii, simply going outside is often our gym. We have the ocean for swimming and the trails for running. But whether you are a local resident or visiting the Big Island on vacation, sometimes you just need to lift some weights.

As a Certified Personal Trainer, I often get asked where the best gym in Kona is.

There are many great spots here and my answer really depends on what you are looking for. Are you looking to zone out and lift heavy on your own, or are you looking for expert coaching and community? For me, I actually use two different spots for two very different reasons. Here is my local’s guide to the fitness scene in Kailua-Kona.

1. Pacific Island Fitness: Where I Go to Lift

When I am off the clock and just want to put my headphones in and train, you will find me at Pacific Island Fitness.

Located right in the heart of the industrial area, this is what I call a "classic" gym. It isn't trying to be a spa; it is a place to do work. It is spacious, open, and has that gritty, old-school cool vibe that makes you want to lift heavier.

Why I Love It:

  • The Equipment: They have everything. Rows of cardio machines, plenty of squat racks, and dumbbells that go heavier than most of us will ever need. You rarely have to wait for equipment here.
  • The Space: It feels big. They have high ceilings and good airflow, which is essential when training in the humidity.
  • The Sauna: This is my favorite part. After a heavy work out, hopping in their sauna is non-negotiable for my recovery. It is a rare find in gyms these days, and it makes a huge difference.

2. The FitXchange: Where I Go to Coach

While Pacific Island Fitness is where I do my solo work, The FitXchange is my professional home.

This is not your typical "big box" gym where you swipe a card and nobody knows your name. The FitXchange is a private training facility focused entirely on functional fitness and personalized results. This is where I train my private clients and lead small group classes.

Why It Is Different:

  • Private & Personal: If you are intimidated by crowded gyms, this is the answer. It is intimate and focused. We focus on form, safety, and longevity.
  • The Community: Whether you are doing a 1-on-1 session or a small group class, all of the trainers are incredibly encouraging.
  • Functional Training: We don't just use machines that isolate one muscle. We use kettlebells, suspension trainers, and free weights to build a body that moves well in real life.

So, Which One Is For You?

If you are a self-starter who knows your routine and wants access to a sauna, check out Pacific Island Fitness. They offer day passes for visitors, too.

If you are looking for guidance, someone to check your form, or a structured plan to reach your goals, come see me at The FitXchange.

Hopefully, I will see you at one (or both!) soon.
